Yes LEO, WMV plays fine, as does MP3 and any other codecs. I didnt realize there was a problem with flashplayer later than version 7, but that does explain a lot. Just one of those things we have to live with. Linux is not about support or hand holding, it is about finding the answers to your problems. I am glad to help you where I can, but really all your answers are at Stanton Finley's site. He will walk you through everything you need to do. It is very easy once you get past the...stage fright...of a new OS. If you have to reinstall and start over just look at it as more practice. It shouldnt slow you down more than a few hours. I suggest right off the bat you create a seperate /home partition so when you do reinstall/upgrade all your settings and personal files are untouched.

No, you dont EVER want to log in as root. Not unless you know exactly what and why you are doing this. ALWAYS su or sudo to root. This is just safe pratice and will decrease the chances of you totally screwing your install astronomically. That said, please go to:

http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...ion_notes.html

And read what he has to say. This man (a member of this forum BTW) has put together a guide we ALL have sworn by for onwards of 3 or 4 versions now. It is truely EVERYTHING you need to know to get up and running, written in plain English using time proven methods that are the LEAST confusing way to get your Linux box ready for action. Trust me my friend, he covers ALL of your questions. In fact, if I were you, first thing tomorrow (or whenever you have 3 free hours) I would start from scratch and reinstall FC5, do a yum update then log into this site and follow ALL oif his directions. You will walk out of that 3 hour session with a new outlook on Linux and enough competance to direct easier questions in here yourself!

leo, please try my instructions again. When is asks to remove the file, type 'y' (for yes). The second time you might get errors about packages already being installed - If you do, ignore them and just go into the next command.
As for RealPlayer and WMV, like I said my Media in FC howto shows all that.

Have you installed mplayer-plugin?
BTW - A missing video codec usually doesn't show the missing plugin error - Is it a flash site, WMV media or both?

It looks to me like everyone has gone out of their way to help you. If you go to Stanton Finleys site and follow the guide step by step, It's pretty hard to go wrong.
As for real player, there is a how to at Stanton Finleys's site it has nothing to do with not getting wmv's to play, wvm depends on codecs which you will find at Stanton Finley's site . xmms, totem-xine, mplayer, rythmbox and more, all step by step. Where? Stanton Finleys site.

Did you read this part?
Quote:
* If you have not already done so go to "System" > "Administration" > "Security Level and Firewall". Enter your root password and click "ok". On the "SELinux" tab click on "Modify SELinux Policy", click on "Compatibility" to open it and tick the check box next to "Allow the use of shared libraries with Text Relocation". Click "ok". Reboot your machine to implement the new SELinux policy.
. That is telling you to click on the gnome menu and choose System, then choose Administration then choose Security Level and Firewall, and then click. Then enter your root password and press enter. Then folow the rest of the instructions. If you don't reboot, those settings will not take effect and you will have problems.

If you get errors, it doesn't do those that are trying to help any good when you say that didn't work. What didn't work? What helps is if you copy the commands used and error messages and paste them into your message so they know what didn't work and maybe why it didn't work.

EDIT: or use Firewings instructions (I'll have to get around to bookmarking your stuff too Firewing1 Just so used to Stans ).

No need to be angry.
Code:
su -
yum install mplayer-plugin
installs it, it's on my Media page. Just read it through carefully.
