Just beginning to use Fedora

Hello, my name is Anthony and I have just installed Fedora Core5 on to my computer. I'm am currently attending Chubbs in Parsippany, NJ so I figure I should get a basic know how of Linux before I get to that course being as how I am mostly familiar with Windows and the operations of that OS.

Let me say this now, I have not truly browsed this forum yet for answers to my problems; I ran a couple of my own forums and found when people do what I'm doing now to be some what annoying, but I've been taking a crash course in Linux teaching my self for the past 6 hours and am VERY tired. I figure by creating this thread by the time I get to check it again some one will have either answered my questions or provide helpful links to where I can find the answers I need.

1. Thunderbird; I downloaded Thunderbird to check my mail and accessed it once to check my mail, closed it, and now I can't find it again! I know stupid but the Linux file system is completely new to me and I can't seem to find any thing.

2. When I open up programs like LimeWire and Thunderbird, the Terminal opens up as well. Is there a way to just get the program to run with out the Terminal window taking up space in my task bar.

3. Counter-Strike; CS! I NEED IT! I heard that Linux can run CS. Now I am a COMPLETE novice, alright, I don't know ****. No commands besides 'cd'. I've looked around and Googled tutorials but havn't been successful in finding a helpful tutorial for a complete novice. If I can get CS working, I'll be in heaven.

4. Web Sever; I develope web sites once in a while in my spare time, keep up with my knowledge of the PHP&MySQL language. Me and my professor couldn't get it working today, but he says he read up on it and probably figured it out. Now I have an Alienware and sure as hell don't feel like lugging that thing through doors and across a parking lot, not to mention the damage I do to this thing bumping it around. I also can't figure out how to get back into my email to send him a message saying to just tell me how to do it.

Windows was very easy, and I am very intrigued by this OS. Some thing new, some thing else that I can learn, so I hope some one can help point me into the right direction. Again, this is only my first 6 hours working with this OS, I am not familiar with it's core, programs, configuration, etc... So if I can get a list (with links) to great applications to ease the day to day use of checking email, browsing the web, downloading music, etc..., that would be amazing.

Thank you for your time and I'm sorry for the specified questions in the general forum.

Hello:
Welcome to the forums.
For starters I would suggest that you have a read through here:
http://www.fedorafaq.org/basics/
and
http://www.fedorafaq.org/
and then you can follow this setup guide for your FC5
http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...ion_notes.html
and then you can follow search the how-to section on the forums here for the server set-ups etc.

Thunderbird or your mail? When you said "I downloaded Thunderbird", I hope you actually meant "I installed Thunderbird by yum", because you should not replace Fedora Core packages with programs installed without package management. Thunderbird installed from the Fedora Core package should be easily available from the main menu.
