OK, Atari. Here's your help... But you're probably not going to like it.
1) If source code gives you the willys, (it does me too!) Don't mess with it.
2) Follow the law of diminishing returns. Sounds to me like it's long past time to ditch the aztech um9100 (or send it back to whence it came) and start with a proven performer.
My weapon of choice would be the external ZOOM V.90 Faxmodem Series 0269. If you need an internal, the Zoom/FaxModem 56K PCI Plus Model 2920.
Everything you need for drivers is built into the stock default kernel. No need to screw around with compilng anything!
As near as I can see, that is your "best practices solution".
