I need to understand grub, partitions etc after hosing a Windows/Linux setup

used Acronis Disk Director to reorganise my hard disk and grub failed
- Linux wouldn't boot.
After running FDISK /mbr Windows was able to boot.

I have a few questions here.

Is the MBR separate from partitions in general, it doesn't count as a
partition itself?

Is the MBR the same as the boot block?

Does grub overwrite the MBR and the person creating the grub.conf has
to list the partitions the other OSs are located?

Does that mean that if I reinstall grub now and I point it to the new
location of the Linux partition it will work?

The problem was that there was a Linux LVM partition as well as /boot
partition and I wonder where grub.conf installed so that I can reedit
to see if I can get Linux to boot again.

I also wonder whether Acronis DD might have dama

You might want to read up on the MBR, it's the boot sector. Not a full partition exactly.

Your grub bootstrap code got overwritten. You can use Fedora rescue mode and the grub-install script to try to put it back. The old grub.conf should still be there, but maybe it doesn't work from your grub problems.

grub.conf should still be in your /boot parition. Now Windows runs its bootloader on the C: drive, rather than grub running from /boot. The partition's still there, Windows just doesn't know about it.
