Another lame Fedora installation graphics mode problem ridden n00b

Hi, I can tell this isn't the first time someone has had problems getting the Fedora graphical mode to work, or the welcome screen to pop up for that matter. I thought maybe I'd ask because I've been reading through the forums trying different things and nothing seems to work for me.

Here is a picture of my problem:

This occurs after I am done installing and it tries to go into the happy little graphical mode welcome screen. My computer crashes and burns at this point. Key commands are pointless - my system bus locks up and the capslock/numlock/scrolllock lights cannot be activated on my keyboard during this error.

I can log in to linux and boot with it fine... in TEXT mode. Text mode is boring. I really want to be able to type startx and not have it crash. The installer recognizes my video card and my monitor. I tried fidgiting with the xorg.conf file but really to no avail as everything seemed to be ok inside it. Not that I know what I'm doing.

I ran the yum updates. I installed Fedora Core 5 32bit and Fedora Core 5 64bit.

Neither are working.

My system:
Pentium 4 950 D 3.4Ghz Dual Core with 64 bit support
2.5Gb DDR2 ram
SATAII 160gb drive
80Gb Maxtor IDE drive (thats the linux install drive)
NVidia GeforceFX 6600 LE 256mb
PhysX Card

Someone please help the newbie.

I would try installing the nvidia driver as mentioned above. I have a 6800XT that does not play well at all with the "nv" driver. It ends up displaying a bunch of colored junk, a lot like you're screen but slightly different. The "vesa" driver works fine though. It'll get you through until you can get the nvidia one installed.

I followed the aforementioned link to no avail. I reinstalled in 32 bit Fedora Core 5. I then proceeded further and ended up getting to the point where I had the nvidia display adapters installed. It didn't help much. When my computer loaded it blatently stated that the nvidia driver load FAILED. That was helpful. Anyways I could load into text mode as usual but then couldn't go anywhere from there.

I got the bright idea of taking out my Nvidia video card with a really old crappy Intel video card. Needless to say I was able to install linux without any hesitation. I then proceeded to try and install Nvidia drivers using various command line installation methods similar to the "aforementioned" ones. I then had the same experience all over again.

This time I installed Fedora Core 5 64bit version. Here I am. I'm in 64 bit Fedora Core 5 right now using my strange Intel graphics card in 1024x768 on a 1440x900 capable widescreen.

It would be really great if there was an Nvidia driver I could download somewhere and then run and it would do some progress bars and then I would restart and I could use my Nvidia card.

Anyone have any ideas? ...because I have no idea what I'm doing.

Well, I have no idea about nvidia really (I'm plagued by ATI), but..
I heared somewhere that some nvidia drivers have problems with the 4k kernel stack which leads to the module not loading.
And Fedora uses the 4k stack size, doesnt it?
Sooo, to fix this, you will need to download another kernel, probably from either livna or atrpms, whichever provides an rpm'ed kernel with 8k kernel size.

But, as I said, I have no idea really, just mentioning something I stumpled across while trying to figure out which kernel stack size I should build my kernel with.

Maybe some nvidia user here can tell more about this?
Also, did you try to use the vesa module with nvidia in X11, as described above?

Well, then does anyone know how I can revert or disable the Nvidia driver so that it will run on my regular Intel graphics card ... meaning that I won't have to reinstall linux every time I try and update my graphics drivers?

Hello:
You can disable the nv / nvidia driver by editing your xorg.conf file
gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and under the :
Section "Device"
replace
Driver "nvidia"
or
Driver "nv"

with
Driver "vesa"
Save and exit.
either restart X or reboot

Just out of curiosity is there a BIOS option to disable the on-board video card?
You also may want to have a look through your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if there are any clues given to what is causing your problems.

Seve.
