When I login, It only shows the shell

Ok, when I login, as root or as normal user, it doesn't take me to a desktop environment. Instead, It just stays in the shell. Can anyone tell me why I can't go to the desktop environment?

Check /etc/inittab and make sure that this line reads a 5 rather than a 3.

You can also try to manually start x windows to see what errors you get with

Finally, try to set up your video card and monitor with

system-configure-display

I tried tha 'startx' command and I get many error messages. Here is everything I can see:

(EE) RIVAA128(0) Given depth (16) is not supported by this driver
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a useable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
XIO: fatal IO error (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Thats it. I think this means my ancient video card,or its driver can not display the X window system. And what does that part about a connection mean? I'm sorry I'm asking so many stupid questions but this my first time with Linux.

It looks as if your display was not configured correctly.
try and run:
system-configure-display
as root that should allow to set the settings to your monitor and video card
