Spin down disks in software raid array and otherwise?

I would like to know how to do this. I want to reduce wear and tear on my drives by having them run 24/7, but still keep my data a mere few seconds away if I or something on any of my machines needs it. I have both sata and ide drives, some in software raid some not.
