Partition Software
On my last PC I used a Live Ubuntu 5.10 disk and Gparted to colapse my Windows partition and make some for linux.
Unfortunately on my new Rig:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (Conroe)
2Gb PC2-6400
ATi RADEON X1900XT
250Gb Seagate Barricuda SATA-II
(Self Built)
I can't get any live linux disks to boot as for as the GUI. (I couldn't get FC5 to boot on Virtual PC 2004 inside windows ether, the screen came out all wrong when it hit the GUI).
Anyone know how I can manipulate partitions on this rig? Or why various distros wont load a GUI properly?

fc6 is suposed to support the new processor. plus fc doesn't include the drivers for your video card.

I would say the issue is with the ATI card. Probably requires the ATI drivers for linux from their site. Not sure if it is supported under the ATI drivers. Next best choice would be a Nvidia card.

Can I install the ATi Drivers at the command line?

ATI cards are a real pain when it comes to Linux. I seriously would have gone with an NVIDIA card if you intend to run Linux on the computer.

darn, It's primarilly a windows PC due to games and the lack of a good medea plyer for linux.
I was hoping to Dual Boot FC6 tho.
Any guesses at when there will be a suitable Dristro for me?
I'm going to have to get a broken Thinkpad or something as a Devoted Linux CryptoBook.

I never get far enough into the OS for that.
Is there a way to make FC6 use the Graphic card with Generic Drivers like windows does before I install the CATALYST drivers?

you could install in text mode.
At the splash screen type
linux text
Once the OS is loaded you can then try to boot and see if the GUI comes up. If not, press CTRL-ALT-F1 and go to to 1st virtual terminal and install your drivers from there.

I wanted a way play music from, a FAT32 (or even better an NTFS) windows partition, with good playlist control.
Are there any instructions for installing the ATI drivers at the command line?

rpm and yum run perfectly on the command line. You can download the latest livna rpms (including the kernel module for your kernel) and then use (as root)
Code:
rpm -ivh packagename.rpm
for installing them.
Then, check your xorg.conf: it should have "fglrx" in the "driver section. Load manually the module with modprobe and switch to runlevel 5. If it works, remember to change inittab. If it doesn't, you can temporarily use the generic "vesa" driver (it's only a matter of time before your card get supported by the ati linux driver) to have a gui.
As for the player, once you have installed the ntfs kernel module, you can access all your files as you want.

I'd rather just use the vesa driver so I can get to some form of GUI, I dont use Linux for anything 3d.
I don't know all that much about linux tho. How to I get a Command Line (bofore the Logon Screen appears). And how to I fool it into using the vesa driver?

When you are in front of the logon screen, switch to a virtual console (ctrl+alt+F1), login as root and type
the go to /etc/X11
and edit xorg.conf (copy it with another name first): in the device section, put "vesa" in the "driver" line; something like this (just an example):
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "vesa"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "yourcardname"
