Unable to select display monitor types

I'm a nubee to Linux, I've now installed for the second time and I still can't select my monitor type. When I try and go to any other monitor type (Hansol 701A) I still can't select it. I'm trying to get 1024x768 working for my display. My display adaptor only comes up with a supported maximum resolution of 800x600

Welcome to Linux and Fedora Core... I would like to say that if your Display Adaptor (ie- Video Card) only support 800x600 you will not want to go past that. If you were meaning that Linux only says the Display Adapter can handle 800x600 then follow the semi instructions below.

When trying to select your monitor and it is not in the list you have two options.

1 - Find a monitor in the list of any make/model that has the same specs as your monitor meaning Size, Hz Freq and Vert Freq and display size.

2 - There should be an option to enter a custom monitor in which you will need the above mentioned settings. You should be able to find those by doing some Google'ing around with your monitor's model #.

IF neither of these options work for you but you find the specs of the monitor you can always edit the Xorg config file and manually enter the numbers. You will find this file at '/etc/xorg.conf' and can use a editor as root to make these changes.

Please post back if you need additional assistance!

I'm not able to select any type of monitor using the 'System' - 'Administration' - 'Display' utility. It's like the different supported monitors information was never loaded onto my system. There was no change after my first install and then completing a 'yum update' as well. I've re-installed (with absolutely everything selected) and I still have the same problem. I'm in the middle of doing another 'yum update' to see if I can pick the correct monitor type (Hansol) or any other type.

Did u try googling and manually changing the setting? This might be the best way to fix it. You are using the latest fedora core 5 ISO right?

I am running Fedora 5. I believe that I have 2 problems, the first being the installation didn't detect my monitor type and the second being the install doesn't know the capabilities of my graphics card.
Where would I get an updated driver file for my ATI Xpert 128 graphics card or do I also modify my xorg.conf file for that as well?

Still unable to pick correct monitor type

I modified the /etc/X11/xorg.conf default monitor settings by hand to match my Hansol 701A monitor. I am now able to get upt to 1680x1050 for display resolution.

It still doesn't explain why after my installation and update that I still can't pick any type of monitor. I talked to a friend who installed with the same set of CD's that I used and he has is able to pick and choose the different monitors.
Am I missing some package (set of files) that gives me this functionality? Can I copy them from another working system onto mine?

Well you are coming along nice it sounds like. It is really odd that it would give you that list. I do not know how to fix that.

At the very least it sounds like you are up and running. Next you could maybe try reinstalling from another set of cd's and see if it does the same thing.
