Post How to install NEW/OPTIONAL Software Packages from FC5 Installation CDs?

Hi,
I'm quite new to Linux and I installed FC5 from CDs. Now I know taht during installation, all the available packages are not shown or allowed to be instllaed, eg. thunderbird, k3b etc though I know there is a almost unending and exhaustive list of packages available in Fedora 5 Installer CDs. I hve seen that list at the FC webpage too.

Now how can I install from this installation cds all the other packages that are available and also how can I get a list of these packages without being ONLINE? Please note that I do not have an always on, unlimited internet conectio so I would prefer to do it all Offline.
I tried to use the ADD/REMOVE Software Feature but unfortunatelly it does not work offline.

I installed Thunderbird and K3B from the CDs but I found the process to be quite cumbersome. I had to insert each and every CD in my ROM Drive and then I had to search for the package. In case of K3b, I found the corresponding RPM in Disk4 but when I tried to instal it it simply gave me an error massege that one dependency cdrdao-1.2.1-1 is mising. So I had to Go to Fedora website to check whethere it is available in the core CDs. When I found that it is available in the CORE CDs then I started to searchmy installation CDs again and this time I found it in 3rd CD. I do not think this to be a correct way of doing this thing. There must be a proper way out.

I tried every way as a ROOT and I peronally prefer GUI over CLI.

So I would be grateful if you could help, me out here. I need your help desparately.

Thank you.

Hello:
To install from the CD's you need to or can create a Yum repository from the ISO images:
There is a how-to here:http://www.city-fan.org/tips/YumRepoFromImages

You need to keep in mind that some of the packages may be quite dated.

(moved to Software) Okay, first of all, this is a pretty klunky method in FC5 since you'd have to move the software from the CD's to the hard drive, then make a 'repository' out of that and then disable all the other repositories. I'll give you a couple of links to how it can be done if you're still interested: http://arindamlahiri.blogspot.com/ and http://www.city-fan.org/tips/YumRepoFromImages

Hi friends,

Thank you very much. With the help of the both the links I was able to achieve the goal.

Though I think FC5 developers should seriously consider make it more user friendly. Moreover in our country [as wll as in all the so called 'third world countries'] internet connection is quite costly[ Mine costs $10 per month with only 1 GB of data transfer limit per month for a 256 kbps connection and this is the cheapest quality option available.].So assuming that everytime the user will log on to net to install is not at all a logical, moreover when these packages are already available in the core installation media. I think that there must be two options availble - one like windows ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE option and another the present YUMEX which is a beatiful piece of software usable to update from net all the exsisting packages. I sincerely hope that FC6 will have this!

Thank you very much.

PS: I started in this forum with two main problems - 1> Connecting to net [problem's solution that I found out is quite India specific though can be applied to anyADSL modem connection]. 2> This one.
So should I make two tutorials and post it in this forum's HOW TO section?
