Ok, i screwed something up (again)
System:
Dell inspiron 5100
Fedora Core 5
ati M7 video card
I was playing around with trying to get xgl to work on my laptop (was unsuccessful as it didn't run fast enough) Had to install proprietary ati drivers, uninstall them, reinstall them, change settings, uninstall again, etc. Finally I got tired of messing with it and tried to go back to my original settings. Didn't work. When I boot the computer it gives an error about x not being configured correctly (default is init 5) and gives me the option of resetting up the xorg.conf file. I have tried that and it doesn't fix my problem. I have deleted the file hoping that a fresh file would fix the problem (has in the past) that didn't help. The only way I can start the computer is to append a 3 in grub effectively making it init 3. I can then run startx and it happily boots into gnome.
What is the difference between running startx from the command line and booting the computer with init 5?
