System Administration

Hello, want to ask if anyone, out of experience, could recommend a decent general linux sys admin book.
What I DONT want is to get something and find 300 pages of gnome screenshots telling me how to configure my screensaver.

Check here: http://www.tldp.org/guides.html and check the Red Hat documentation here: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/. And then there is Rute: http://www.chongluo.com/books/rute/

I have bought many books and they seem to be getting dumb down, which I personally do not appreciate. In any case one of the BEST purchases I ever made was a $10 Linux Pocket Guide from O Reilly which covers Fedora. It stays on my desk. Recently I purchased the $50 FC5 / RH4 Bible and I think I will give it to my 13 year old as it is mostly unusable unless you somehow mind meld with the author and figure out his index. The actual articles are simple overviews, but good reading, but I think they need a more dedicated "Advanced" book...

Personally I would rather see some of the HOW TOs published by some of the people here thrown in a book in a finalized version with some of the possible screw ups already hashed out...

Example: I just had a name server not uplinking to the masters because there were spaces between the IP addresses on the listen line.... Simple information like that should be more readily available and its not covered in the name server section of the book.

Basically a Wiki on steroids.... Someone posts the overview and others add in articles on how to configure and solve issues. Obviously this can't be in a book, but its what I would like to see...

One book that I have found quite useful is "Red Hat Linux Networking and System Administration" by Terry Collings and Kurt Wall. It's from Red Hat Press
http://www.bookpool.com/sm/0764599496

Based on the name, it's slanted towards RedHat/Fedora distros.

I too am a fan of books as well as online documentation. Just something about lugging that big 'ole bound text around with ya.
