sigmatel irda usb dongle, how do i set it up?

Hi i bought a sigmatel usb dongle and i've no idea how to set it up. I looked through a few of the tutorials but there wasnt much help. when i plug it in and do dmesg i get

usb 3-1: USB disconnect, address 3
usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
usb 3-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
SigmaTel STIr4200 IRDA/USB found at address 4, Vendor: 66f, Product: 4200
drivers/net/irda/stir4200.c: IrDA: Registered SigmaTel device irda0

as the last few lines, i've got irda-utils... but now i'm stuck, one of the tutorials referred to /etc/modprobe.conf and said it should have the usual stuff in it. What's the usual stuff? any help appreciated.
I'm trying to use it to pull the pics off me nokia 6110i with kmobiltools
cheers dudes

i want to try this: http://embedded.centurysoftware.com/pixil/pixilpda.php on it, but i think to install you 've got to start in linux... but i can't even connect (the usb connector has been lost for years)
