long delay when accessing samba

Hi,

I have a network consisting of 2 computers and a laptop. All of them running GNU/Linux ...no Windowz ...I have Fedora Core 5 on one computer, Debian on the other, and Ubuntu on the laptop.

Now the problem I have is that when I try to access the samba shares from the Fedora machine, there is a very long delay (several minutes) until the network hosts show up. That is for example: when I open Places > Network Servers, it takes serveral minutes for the network to show up. Once it appears then browsing the different hosts is normal and fast. Also when I try to access the shares from the other computers, there is no such delay (only few seconds).

any ideas??

thanks

Are you running iptables on the FC5 computer? If so try adding IPTABLES_MODULES="ip_conntrack_netbios_ns" to /etc/sysconfig/iptables-config and restarting iptables (service iptables restart). This allows replies to netbios broadcasts sent from your computer to pass back through your firewall.

No other ideas off the top of my head. Perhaps you should run tcpdump or ethereal to capture some net traffic and see if you can identify the delay from there.

i had problems with FC5 mounting FC4 samba shares. I gave up and swapped to NFS over the network.
