Hiding files ?

Heys Guys

It is my understanding that when something is mounted to a directory everything in that directory "disappears". (correct?). Assuming that this is true, could one unmount some nonesential device, move the target files to the direcotry and then remount the device? Would files hidden in this manner evade locate? What about after a reboot? Will the system complain when it goes to mount a device in a directory that is not empty? Since on a standard system only root can mount/umount only root could hide files in this manner. I assume if one mounted the FC drive in another system that the files would be visable as nothing would be mounted to the target directory.

Thanks
Lazlow

you can mount a device at any subdirectory leaf ... doing so will render what was in that directory invisible until "umounted" ... its standard unix
