External Monitor or Projector for Thinkpad T43p

Does anyone know how to set up an external LCD (Samsung SyncMaster 204B) for Thinkpad 43p with the video card as ATI mobile x300? I tried to speicfy an option "clone" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but the monitor is blacked out and a osd windows "Not Optimun Mode" is floating on the screen.

Thanks!
