Can't play music off of a CD?

My soundcard detection worked, my sound is up and not muted, I have the right sound card selected, and the cd appears to be playing. I just don't hear anything. What do I need to do here?

Open a terminal and type 'alsamixer' then look for minimized or muted settings.

This used to be caused by not having a cable running between the CD and the motherboard, I don't know how later distros like FC5 handle this as I've always made sure to have that little cable.
