How do I tell if ACPI is working... (Asus Lappy)

Hi Folks,

I got Fedora 5 installed on my Asus laptop (A6Km), and finally got the nvidia graphics drivers working (joy) but how can I test if other things 'just work'? I'm thinking, how do I test ACPI / general power stuff is working? what about the quick launch buttons - any hope?

Thanks in advance,
Toby

ps, any hints on other things like the build in camera and microphone would be great

Install Tux Racer (PPRacer) from YUM and see if it plays. If it does, accelerated graphics is working. I'm not sure what other "stuff" you are concerned about. You have a built in camera in your laptop? Nice.

Stick the following script into /etc/acpi/events and restart acpid service (as root "service acpid restart")
Then push buttons and see what it tells you (you will want to remove it again once you have collected the info you need since the messages get annoying). Then you can start attaching scripts to specific events to do useful things. There should be a sample script in /etc/acpi/events to get you started

# universal acpi event capture and report
event = *
action=/usr/bin/wall %e

Hi,

I setup the script (created a file called test.conf in the /etc/acpi/events folder), restarted the service... but, er, what buttons should I press!? My 'Zzzz' button doesn't seem to do anything and I'm not sure what else to try!

If things arn't working when they should be, can you point me at something to look at to find out why? I'm not even sure how its supposed to behave.

Thanks again,
Toby

Woops, sorry! second line of that script should be

event=.*

(no spaces and a dot before the *)

Actions that you should see are any soft buttons (some may generate events, some not) fn-key things if you have a fn key, unplugging from power and plugging back in. Closing lid (although power manager is likely to trap that too). But it sounds as if you maybe don't have power manager installed?

Hey,

Thanks for the tip

Not sure I have power manager installed or not! I found a panel under KDE's control manager though which enabled a whole load of ACPI related things. Actions to take when I close the lid etc... again, I've still no idea if it works

I'll try the revised script and post my findings - just in the interest of seeing what's what/

Thanks again.
Toby
