This is my output

# ls -l /dev/ttyACM0
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 166, 0 Jul 21 01:36 /dev/ttyACM0

Set up user account as a member of uucp; no change.
When connection made to ISP in root and then log in user account I am able to browse in user account. When I ldisconnect from ISP in user account and then reconnect I cannot browse. Suggestions appreciated.

ownership looks right to me. here is mine...

[root@localhost ~]# ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 188, 0 Jul 21 07:23 /dev/ttyUSB0

I don't think you should have to log in as root though. Try logging in as user, open terminal and su- to root, then run your pppd call <script>. That should get you connected, then you should be able to browse as your regular user.
BTW, "I" am down in Trinidad also ( for a couple more days, anyway ) so I know this works. I was able to connect yesterday but the connection seemed a little slow, I was doing the bandwith test at "http://bandwidthtest.tstt.net.tt/" and was only able to get 384k max after running the tests a couple of times. Most times was less than that. I think that this is related to an issue addressed at "http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=300962", but have not looked at it.
I can also connect by going to > Administration > Network , where I set up tty/usb0 as a modem with a new connection -- Network will ask you for the root password as well.
If anyone figures out the speed issues. make sure to post them...

an update!!

Tried all suggestions so far still no solution. Only able to transfer approx 15kb in user account when connect to ISP from this account. If connect to ISP in user account then log in as root i cannot browes. If I connect in root account then log in as user i am able to browse. Right now I connected to ISP in root then logged in as user (I am presently in user account) and writing this post and at the same time upgrading my FC5 installation. My download speed is peaking at approx. 90Kbs which gives a bandwith of approx 720Kbs. I need to do all this by just logging into user account and connecting.

The problem appears to be a compression problem (i am no expert). Still need help.
Below is the output of /var/log/messages
I observed that when the last line occurs I am able to browse. Seems to occur in root.

Jul 22 23:30:51 localhost pppd[4972]: Serial connection established.
Jul 22 23:30:51 localhost pppd[4972]: Using interface ppp0
Jul 22 23:30:51 localhost pppd[4972]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyACM0
Jul 22 23:30:55 localhost pppd[4972]: CHAP authentication succeeded
Jul 22 23:30:55 localhost pppd[4972]: local IP address 201.238.125.202
Jul 22 23:30:55 localhost pppd[4972]: remote IP address 192.168.171.96
Jul 22 23:30:55 localhost pppd[4972]: primary DNS address 196.3.132.1
Jul 22 23:30:55 localhost pppd[4972]: secondary DNS address 196.3.132.4
Jul 22 23:30:55 localhost pppd[4972]: Deflate (12) compression enabled
Jul 22 23:31:57 localhost pppd[4972]: Lost compression sync: disabling compression

This is confirmed; observed it a few times. Is thie an ISP problem??
Need to try to disable this compression manually.
PS: ISP is offering EVDO coverage. Is this speed adequate or can it be increased??

Problem solved!!!!

Do not load ppp's Control Compression Protocol - ccp.c

Add noccp to /etc/ppp/options

Thanks to all who assisted

Interesting. Where did you learn this? Seems like an ISP specific tip.

If you can afford $250, here's THE solution:

http://booster-antenna.com/index.php...products_id=99

Not a vendor, just a customer...but that baby rocks. Turns EVDO into both plain 'ol Ethernet and WiFi.

Also moves that fairly high-powered RF signal away from your nuts...worth it for that alone unless you like mutated offspring...

It's kinda cheating but if you buy this box you'll be online about five minutes later at full-tilt boogie.

I'm having a similar problem. I get this though:

Username and pw are correct, and the phone indicates it's connected as well. When I do Ctrl+c, it disconnects and the phone indicates that too.
I just installed Fedora 8

Any ideas?

Thanks
