Fedora doesn't detect removable devices any more
I discovered it on 22nd/23rd June (I guess), but as I don't use them every day then it began maybe earlier. Updates haven't fixed it.
If I put in a CD, nothing happens. No icons appear on the desktop and there is no CD-RW drive icon in the Computer folder. Also I don't see Floppy Drive icon there any more. If I put in a USB Flash Disk then USB Flash Disk icon appears in the Computer folder, but if to click on it, it says "Unable to mount media. There is probably no media in the drive.".
The only specific thing I did before I discovered it was that I tried to get a Canon digital camera working some days ago. Fedora didn't want to detect it, but at last the only thing I did was removing /usr/lib/gphoto2/2.1.6/libgphoto2_canon.so or something like that.
I cannot try if I can load images from the camera at the moment as it is not here at the moment.
Hardware browser says that the CD-ROM drive is /dev/hdd, but hdd doesn't exist in the /dev folder even if to put a CD into the drive.

Well, mine's working : I see "TheFrozenThone" CD icon on my Desktop when I put in Warcraft III: TFT.
Have you tried using the development Gnome? It's what I'm running now, and it's very stable. Just note that it probably won't be pulled in, but gtk(2) and pygtk2 both need to be updated for it to work properly.

I don't want to use the development version. I use FC5 with all updates and I'm a Gnome user.

Check System - Preferences - Removable Drives and Media to see if you have the proper options enabled. Also check to see if autofs is on. In a terminal, type "chkconfig --list | grep autofs". if you see "5:on" in the output, autofs is enabled.

I have checked those settings already. Autofs is enabled and Removable Drives and Media settings are all right.

When you stick in a CD in the CDROM drive or plug in your USB drive, run "dmesg" in a terminal window and check the tail end of the output. Cut and paste the output here if possible.

Putting a CD into the CD-ROM drive adds nothing, but the USB disk adds these lines:

Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices

I removed only this file. (It was actually /usr/lib/libgphoto2/2.1.99/canon.so, but it doesn't make sense.)

I don't think the camera should have anything to do with it, but just incase:
Code:
rpm -e gphoto2
yum install gphoto2

I reinstalled FC5 and it's ok now. Printer that didn't work already before this issue, works again also.
