Newbie need help... Gnome problem

I am a linux newbie trying FC5 out.... took me a whole day to setup the system and get it running on my dell laptop.

I was trying to remove evolution email client and i think i accidentally removed some other important stuff for the system as well....

my system now can still boot up. everything works fine up to the point of the login screen.

When i enter my username and password to login to my account, it seems like gnome won't load properly. i only had a window showing the terminal and another firefox window. No task bar/menu bar.... nothing.... However, firefox actually works and can surf the net just fine.

And ideas how I can save the system from the command line terminal i have?

I have already tried something like this:

yum install gnome
yum groupinstall gnome
yum install evolution

None of them works.

I hope someone can save me from having to reinstall everything again! Thank you very much.

What do you mean "none of them works?" Are you issuing the commands as you, the user, or are you switching user to root before doing so? If you're trying to do it as user then at a terminal type "su" (without the quotes) enter root password and try again. Make a note of any error messages and post them here.

Removing Evolution takes away itself, evolution-sharp and Beagle.

sorry, didn't mention things clearly last time....

i was running yum as root.

since i am back to windows now, i can only vaguely recall what happened....

yum install gnome : returns something like "nothing to do"
yum groupinstall gnome: returns "no such group"
yum install evolution: installed a couple packages, but when i reboot the system, nothing changed apparently...

Hope that helps you understand the situation better.
