Any preparations needed to upgrade monitor?
Hi there guys,
I'm using a 17" Dell CRT monitor with FC5, and a 17" analog flat panel is on it's way to me(also by Dell).
Do I have to do anything to switch monitors, or is it just a plug & go type of thing? I know that it checks for new hardware on startup, but I didn't want to mess anything up by skipping a necessary step.
thanks,

Hello:
This is just my experience, so your mileage may vary. I have switched monitors a number of times and as far as I can remember I did not have an issue. I have switched between lcd and crt and visa versa. You may have to check your settings afterwards, but usually it's no big deal.

As long as the new 17" flat panel is capable of running at your pre-exisinting (that is, Dell 17" CRT) resolution untill you can subsequently adjust your display settings (Using "System" "Administration" "Display"), then you will have no issues. Most 17" flat panels will be able to run at resolutions that are used by 17" CRTs.
The alternative is to simply change your display settings to match your new monitor (or use a "generic "17" LCD setting) , then power down (the new settings would only take effect once X.org is restarted), install the new monitor, then start up again.

Hi there guys,
Thanks very much for your replies. What I was worried about was the refresh rate. A very long time ago, I fried a monitor while playing with Mandrake when I altered a refresh setting that I shouldn't have.
I just didn't know if Fedora would catch the new monitor and keep me from making another costly mistake
thanks,

The only time I had issues X.Org refused start and I received an "out of range" error, leaving me with no GUI and just the command line.
It probably is best to play it safe and select a generic 17" LCD first, as this will have very conservative settings.
