Question mouse, package manager problems on FC5 x86_64 install

I've completed an installation on my PC to make it a dual-boot system. When I first logged into FC5, Gnome came up. I immediately noticed that I could not see the mouse pointer. The system did recognize mouse movement and clicks, as I blindy tried to click on the right icon or menu option. My PC is a new emachines T6532. It has a Microsoft wheel mouse and the graphics card is an Nvidia Force 6100. During the FC5 installation process, I don't remember anything about configuring the mouse, but it didn't seem an issue, as the mouse pointer was visible at that time.

Secondly, from the state of the Sessions menu, it appeared that KDE was not installed. I'm surprised, as I chose all 3 of the "type of user options" when installing. When I tried to add KDE, Package Manager fails with an error box stating "Unable to retrieve software information" and shuts down when the box is closed. Since this is a completely fresh install, I haven't even had a chance to foul anything up , so I would appreciate any suggestions as to fixing these two problems.

Hi perlster. I'm having the EXACT same problem. i have an emacihines T6528 with the same Nvidea 6100 graphics settings, but mine is embedded into the motherboard, not a card. when i installed FC5 onto another hard drive it also installed without asking for any mouse configuration. When I boot to that hard drive the same thing happens after FC5 had loaded, no curser.
Have you received any info or figured out how to fix this? Just for info purposes: I have XP Home on C: drive, SimplyMepis 3.3 on D:drive (the mouse works fine in it), and FC5 on the E: drive. So I have 3 hard drives in my pc. I don't know of any reason why that could cause this problem in FC5 when I boot into it.
Please let me know if you get a reply.
thanks, Jim

mouse problem solved as found in other thread here:
Place the following line in video card section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf after the "Board Name .." line:
Option "HWcursor" "false"

Package manger problem probably still there, but don't how to find it in KDE. Modem still "busy" - new problem is that KPPP help fails because "Could not register with DCOP". However, KDE help works. Internet Connection Wizard is still AWOL.

Hi perlster. ok, at the gtoman/localhost$ (I think thats what it shows) command prompt, when I first enter the Terminal program I type vi etc/X11/xorg.conf Then I push the INSERT key and the word INSERT appears at the bottom of the page.
Where the cursor (or the black rectangle) is at the top of the page I typed this:
---- xorg.conf ----
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nv"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "nVidia Corporation C51 PCI Express Bridge"
##fehlender cursor, hwcursor off rhb#182517
Option "HWCursor" "off"
EndSection

and then another guy that helped me said to type Shift +:wq! which saves the changes.
I did that and then when i open the File column to Save and then Close the program to reboot the pc, there is no SAVE option in it, it only has CLOSE, so how do you know if the changes I made in the Terminal program have been SAVED or not, because everytime I reboot the PC I still never get a pointer (cursor) when it gets to the desktop.
Please tell me if i'm doing this correctly or not. PLEASE show me exactly what I need to type and if the spacing between words and symbols is correct because I know that everything has to be typed EXACTLY right or the program won't accept it.
I appreciate your help,
Thanks, Jim
