Bootloader problems for Dual Boot with XP

Let me preface this my saying that I DID have an XP/Vista dual boot setup, which I know messes with the bootloader a bit, but I used the Vista install disk ot set it back to ntloader. Im not sure if there is anything else changed that might be causing my problems, but here they are.

The first problem, quite insignificant, is that the graphical installer does not fit on my screen. I can see most options except the Next/Back buttons. This isn't a big deal since I can text install and use tab to select the next buttons, but I have tried forcing bigger/smaller resolutions in the 4:3 aspect. I dont understand this error since it won't let my cursor leave the monitor bounds but I know there are buttons there.

The main problem is with what I presume is the bootloader. When I first installed, I chose to install the bootloader to /dev/sda at the MBR, and the rest of the install went well. But when I boot my machine, it goes into XP without any question. When I unplug sda, the GRUB bootloader comes up, but it will not load Fedora (I have gotten various error messages, Error 17 I believe, and something about not being able to mount a drive). Although I had seen that Fedora does not support other bootloaders, I read about making a boot.lnx file and adding it to XP's boot.ini . I did this, but the boot.lnx was a blank file and yielded no results. I determined that I needed to install GRUB to the first sector of /dev/sdb/ in order to create a working boot.lnx, but I cannot get the bootloader screen to come up in the installer. I also tried linux rescue from the install DVD, then performing grub-install but it keeps failing, saying something about the requested hard drive not being linked to the BIOS (or something like that).

I'm unsure where to go from here, so any help is much appreciated. I have put in about 10 hours attempting to get this install to work, and am anxious to get started with Fedora.

Hello:
If I read your post correctly you have windows on /dev/sda and FC on /dev/sdb ..correct?
You boot from the /dev/sda drive where windows is installed?
If so, then boot from the FC5 install disc , choose F5 type linux rescue and follow along with the on-screen instructions until you get to the last prompt. Then type chroot /mnt/sysimage enter and type fdisk -l and pay attention to the output to confirm where each OS is installed.
Presumably windows is on /dev/sda , if so then type grub-install --recheck /dev/sda enter then type exit, exit and reboot, changing back to your normal boot order in your BIOS and you should be good to go.
If not, post back and we will go from there.
hth

Thanks Seve. That solved my problem. However, when booted, Fedora does not start up the first boot Setup Agent or any kind of GUI. It only gives me a command prompt. Also, Windows will not boot through the GRUB menu.

PS- I just tried rebooting my PC and it now hangs at the BIOS... not a good sign I know. But I know this isnt the Dell BIOS forum so Im not expecting any help with that. I'll try to get it functional again then I will update you. THanks for your help

Hmm... looked at my USB printer and the power light was flashing erratically. So I reset the printer and that somehow fixed everything. Any idea on how to install Gnome or KDE, and get XP working on GRUB? THanks.

Hello:
Boot from the FC5 install disc again and do the same thing as before [F5, linux rescue etc.], just make sure you enable your network.
When you get to the end type chrooot /mnt/sysimage and at the prompt type yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" including the quotes

Once it's done type exit, exit and reboot and you should have the Gnome desktop next time you reboot FC

It went through the install, but it did not start GNOME when I rebooted. Thank you for your continual help.

Hello:
I am sure there is a way to correct what you are experiencing now, however since this is a new install I think you would be best to just re-install FC5 at this point. When you get to the point of where the boot loader is to be installed, choose advanced boot loader options and make sure that grub is installed on the HD that you want.
And if grub is not working correctly afterwards, just follow the instructions already posted.
