wifi native support - comming soon to linux!

http://www.zdnetasia.com/news/softwa...9367396,00.htm

I read this on zdnet, but it was fairly interesting to see that this is finally progressing into kernel support for wifi. one more thing that makes future computing way smoother.

While the article loads, what do you mean by WiFi finally making its way into the kernel? There's been quite some bit of drivers for wireless chipsets in the kernel for some time now. True, many are missing and getting your wireless to work can be tricky (especially hoping from network to network can be a pain), if anything, I'd say that a number of userspace and profiling tools are needed as most of the tools that allow controlling the WiFi require root permissons (to admin keys and stuff) If we could have per user profiles for keys and stuff like that, not tying these to the device configuration as such, I think it would be awesome!

After reading the article, it is not clear what new devices will be now supported, nor which chpsets or how are they going to implement these, other than "its being merged into the Linux kernel" bit. This might actually be a good idea, still better userspace apps are needed, IMO.

I don't have much experience in the wireless arena - but I thought this is what the NetworkManager toolset was supposed to address.

Maybe I'm dumber than what I consider myself to be, but I've had major problems using either Netowrk Manager or WPAsuplicant for some reason.
