Cool UMTS/ 3G under FC5

Hi everyone

.... searched the web and forums... but....

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on how to get a Option 3G/UMTS card working under FC5...

As soon as I plug it into the PCMCIA slot and check /var/log/messages I find that the device has been detected (ooh, nice flashing lights) and kudzu reports that its been assigned eth1, but with no driver its not available to be used.

Older How to's suggest loading the usbserial kernel driver with modprobe, but doing an lsmod shows the driver loaded, but no device attached and no further action in var/log/messages....

.. that of course means I cannot communicate with the device (and I still have all those pages in the How to work through -ndiswrapper is that new hip-hop boy band, right?? )

Am I to roll back to an older version of FC so my kernel will behave like the How to predicts (please say it ain't so)?? or is it finally time to give up on FC on my laptop and try something like *chants flameproof spell* Gentoo....
