proxy woes

So im connected though a proxy server in my class at tec but i cant seem to get yum to work. Ive put my proxy information in yum.conf and my user profile. I can browse the net fine but when i try to update i get:

Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Update Process
Setting up repositories
core [1/3]
Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: core
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: core

Also if i try to get somthing though wget i get an error: Error parsing proxy URL http://usrass:111.111.111.111:8080: Bad port number.

Any ideas?
