intellimouse
Absolute newbie would like to install intellimouse explorer in fedora (kernal 2.6. 11. 27 LC1. I'm guessing the intellimose 5.2 disc is worthless and I have to download driver.
1. Which directory should the driver be in?
2. Is the driver preinstalled on LC2210D linux certified laptop?
3.Where to download and how?
the laptop runs fedora core 4 but I honestly don't know if its red hat 8 or 9

If you already have FC4 installed on the laptop the mouse should just work when you plug it in. You don't need any extra drivers, and yes, you're right, the windows driver you have is no use at all in linux. You may need to edit your xorg.conf file if not all the features are supported (search thsi forum for a how-to if you need to do this). I only use a standard two button wheel mouse but that works 'out of the box'.
By the way, if the laptop runs FC4 it isn't redhat 8 or 9, it's FC4

I have a wireless Intellimouse Explorer and yes, it does work 'out of the box'. Just plug it in before you turn on your PC and Fedora will recognize and configure it.
And like Steve said, if you want ALL the buttons to work like they did in Windows, you'll need to do some extra work. I've covered this in a couple other threads:

Thanks Steve, especially for the fc 4 tip. With red hats on both gui's it would have thrown me off for a while. I going to try to download epson printer driver next (if I can find one) by saving it to cdrw with windows pc and then installing driver from that since I'm leary about going on line untill I know more about linux security. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Your Epson printer should work immediately too. What model? Just plug it in and print a test page.
Don't worry too much about Linux security for now. Even a clean install is 50x more secure than Windows. You'll likely never encounter any viruses, trojans, spyware on your Fedora install. It just doesn't happen.

A lot of printers will now 'just work' with linux. Before you attempt to install a third part driver (which you should avoid if possible) try connecting and configuring it with the Printer setup menu. Unlike windows, for most devices you don't need to search for a separate driver, although sometimes this is necessary. If you have any problems try posting a separate thread with full details of the make and model of your printer. I've never experienced any issues so it's not really my area of expertise. However, you may find this link useful. It's for redhat rather than FC4 but it will give you a general idea:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/e...-printing.html
Edit: oops, jtang613 and me obviously posted at the same time. As he says, you might not even need to configure it. It might just work straight away.

I took your advice and just used a Dell 2 button and it works fine. The printer was a stylus 62 and works great (printed a beautifull test page. Thanks a million. I hope I'm not being a pest but the next thing I'm aiming for is to install an external floppy drive that I got with an old ibm thinkpad. Do I use the gui for that too or the "mount" command I've been reading about? For my other window's pc's I always make an emergency boot floopy because one time a cd drive failed and I had no pc until it was replaced. Can I do this with Linux?

Glad everything's worked for you. To be honest I'm not sure about creating a boot floppy. I'm sure it's possible, but if you post this as a separate question someone will know for sure. As for the external floppy drive, try plugging it in, booting, and see if it shows up in places>computer menu.
