fc5 dell e1505 unable to open initial console

i am getting the error 'unable to open initial console' on kernel i have compiled for this machine.
i have

CONFIG_UNIX98_PTYS=y
CONFIG_LEGACY_PTYS=y
CONFIG_LEGACY_PTY_COUNT=256


what am i doing wrong? vanilla 2.6.16.18

Have you found a solution for this? I'm having the same issue.

well, i used the default kernel's config from /boot and modified it to fit my system, but didn't reallY remove anything.

that should let you boot, but i had to use an initrd image,too
from there, look at what modules are loaded when you are in new kernel, it should give you an idea what you can remove.
