Ah. I use t-bird myself and really like it.
I have to admit, I'm not sure what a window tab or window list refers to. For example, I use gnome, and (repeating myself) I can drag the t-bird icon off the menu and onto the gnome menubar (top of display, by default), or the desktop, and the icons work as launchers...click 'em and t-bird starts up.
If I right click on them, I can get to the properties...the command, icon setting, etc. I know they are stored below the "." files and directories in the user's home, and in KDE there is a menu editor in the control center...does that help at all?
Ah, I wonder if, when you hit something that wants to launch email, the association is for evolution, and you want t-bird...that's in (under gnome) System->Preferences->More Preferences->Preferred Applications. Change it from evo to t-bird.
