amarok, Firefox, streaming audio

I understand that this isn't exactly an unknown problem, but I've tried the things I've read about, such as editing mimeTypes.rdf. Does anyone have ideas about how to have Firefox hand a stream, such as a pls fom shoutcast, off to amarok AND successfully get amarok to play it? I'm not sure where the problem lies.

KDE has been configured to go to amarok for pls. mimeTypes.rdf has been edited to make Firefox always ask which program to open for files of mimetype x-scpls. Indeed, it even seems to hand off, at least partially, to amarok. There are, however, two problems:

1) amarok will see but not play the stream. It gives a statement about connecting to the stream. The equalizer graphic indicates it is doing something, then goes back to the state indicating that nothing is being done.

2) clicking on option to open in the Firefox downloads window STILL launches Totem. Totem then complains about needing a plugin.

Ideas?

Hello,
Well I can't really really help you with amarok not playing streams. I'm still waiting for a community manager or ANYBODY to respond to the other two posts about amarok not being able to stream. I have read into it a little and it seems to be a problem with the Gstreamer engine. Some claim that if you use the xine or xmms engine it will work fine. Haven't really messed with it too much though, as im just using rhythmbox for right now.

What i might be able to help you with is Totem being opened as the default application. If you open firefox and type
Code:
about:plugins
in the adress bar it will give you a whole list of stuff. If you right click and select "new" then "string" you should be able to do something similar to here: http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/sho...ht=mms+support
(Look at what g_rus says)
that is how i was able to change totem to mplayer as the default for mms, im assuming you can do the same for .pls. Please get back to me if you figure out the deal with Amarok not streaming.

So it would seem that what is needed is the amarok-xine package to get things working the way I want. Unfortunately this has not been created yet, and I just don't have the time to do it myself in the next month. Oh well.

Ok, I solved both of the problems. What I did was uninstall all the multimedia programs I had installed through yum (vlc), yumex (totem-xine,mplayer), or fedora frog (xine,realplayer10). Then I logged out of KDE and into Gnome and proceeded to rip out KDE with prejudice. This took care of Firefox or Konqueror attempting to open a pls stream using totem or misbehaving in some other ways.

Next I reinstalled amarok and got that working using the xine engine to play streams (in amarok: Settings --> Configure amaroK). I got it cooperating with Firefox by editing the file mimeTypes.rdf to ask for what program to launch and browsing to /usr/bin/amarokapp in the Firefox dialog that asks what program to open the stream with (amarokapp had not been there before).

Next I reinstalled mplayer (still in gnome, so it's gmplayer), fiddled with configurations, and rebooted to make it see the wmv codecs. It plays nicely with amaroK now that I've changed the engine to xine. Totem-xine would be preferable for DVD playback, but I haven't reinstalled to test for conflicts yet.
