FC5 Intel Core Duo only at 1GHz

Hi There, Ive got FC5 running on my Toshiba Tecra A6 which has an Intel Core Duo T2300 @ 1.66GHz. But /proc/cpuinfo only shows the CPU(s) running at 1000Mhz...

Any ideas here?

Possibly it has SpeedStep meaning the CPU is not in use it slows down.

check and see if your cpuspeed service is running. It will slow down the CPU when it isn't used to conserve power. Stop cpuspeed if you want and your CPU should then operate at full speed all the time.

Take a look at this thread to setup cpuspeed to start when you are on battery power (to conserve power) and stop when you are on AC adaptor:

I had the exact same problem with a Shuttle 3n21g5 w/ an AMD x2 4200. I disabled cpuspeed under System>services and it runs at full speed. What is the point of cpuspeed anyway; is linux getting too heavy with extras / why should this be default install item?

It is not a problem for AMD Athlon64 and X2 series because of the features such as Cool'n'Quiet.Like blue13130 mentionned, cpuspeed task is to conserve power when the system does not do intense activities. If you run a intense application like 3D gaming, you will notice the frequency will increase. Rest assured that is a normal. =)

you can also add this to the panel. this displays the current frequency and allows you to click and chang the speed if you want.

to add simply right click the panel and add it.

Which basically says that with cpuspeed defaults, a single process can't cause the cpu to ramp up to full speed.

cpuspeed keeps the CPU temperature and power consumption down. I persume it's default becuase it is particularly useful with notebooks.
