Thumbs up Java 1.5.0.6 installation help

Hi ,

I have installed JDK Java 1.5.0.6 after downloading from java.sun.com in FC5 and when I try to found where it installed I could not find the directory I looked at usr/shared, usr/lib there is a dir java1.5.0 but it is empty. I need JDK 5 to run Jdeveloper so could some one tell me who do I find the dir where it installed.

Thank you.

according to stanton-finley i have try to change the SElinux "SELinux" tab click on "Modify SELinux Policy", click on "Compatibility" to open it and tick the check box next to "Allow the use of shared libraries with Text Relocation". Click "ok"
after I click ok it is not saving any changes. is there another way I can change SElinux. For information I have login as root and change.

After the latest SELinux-related updates, Java seems to work normally. Try not changing the SELinux settings, as long as the machine is updated.

My m/c is uptodate I have update SELinux on 30th Apr when it released. When I try to install Sun Java 1.5.0.6 it extract the file and then installs it. It display 100% but when I look for the dir or the files it is not found. I need Sun Java to run Oracle Jdeveloper I was using it fine in FC4. When I upgrade last week to FC5 and try to install java we had this problem.

Hi Bob.

I followed stanton-finley's guide, but my java installation doesn't work. The only steps i didn't follow were the one about selinux (I have selinux disabled) and the one about JDK (I will probably use Azureus in the future, but I just want to access my company's site for now (they use java pluggins)).

When I run the test at the end through this link (http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp) the yellow box at the top keeps poping up, telling me that additional pluggins are required, it passes all the java runtime detections and in the end, I can't see the "Dancing Duke Logo"...

Any help woud be apreciated...
Thanks
Nuno

Are you running Fedora Core 2, 3, 4, or 5? 32 or 64 bit? If you followed the instructions in the Notes Java will be in /opt.

Hello Again.

I have FC5 installed. I'm using AMD 64 bits Processor so I installed the FC5_64.

I've followed the instructions in the stanton-finley's guide by the book, so every thing is done properly... I've removed the installation files and the installed files, then downloaded the file again from java.sun, and repeated the all process again, just to be sure...

Still, when I try to open the test page, I can't see the "Dancing Duke Logo"....

imdeemvp: I already read the entire thread you gave me, and I have the same problem as many... Everything installed correctly, but java plugin is not working...

Thanks again for your help.

Hi again.

I've tryed some more things, still with no luck

I have, as I said before, Fedora Core 5_64 installed.

I downloaded the file jre-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.bin, installed it, moved it to /opt and created this symlink:
ln -s /opt/jre1.5.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

With no luck, I opened nautilus and found that I have two more directories /usr/lib64/mozilla and /usr/lib64/mozilla-1.7.12 ... so I created two more symlinks

ln -s /opt/jre1.5.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
and
ln -s /opt/jre1.5.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib64/mozilla-1.7.12/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Still doesn't work

Am I doing anything wrong?? I don't understand...

One thing is strange... I didn't downloaded 64 bits version of the java binaries... Is this right??

Thanks Again for the help.

I have an amd 64 now but I am still using the 32bit because it is less hassles. I suggest to try to try it besides lot of the apps are 32bit.

Unhappy

Hi imdeemvp.

I can't understand what is going on...

I thought that the problem for my java instalation not to work was that I first installed java trough the rpm file from sun. So, when I uninstalled the rpm to make it all acording to your tutorial (install allways from the binary package), some of the other dependencies were also uninstalled...

So I got some courage and I reformated my system and installed FC5_64 all over again.

Right after the first boot, the first thing I did was to install Java... I followed your tutorial line by line, and in the end, Java DIDN'T WORK

Can you give me some more help, please?

Thank you again

Nuno

Smile Finally :) :)

Hello.

Finally I managed to put java working on my FC5_64 installation... After a lot of googling and searching in the fedora forum, i discovered the thing that was right in front of me.

I installed Java using i586 (32 bits) architecture, and I was willing to put Firefox 64 bits instalation working with it...

Well, nobody thought that probably installing java (32 bits) with mozilla's 32 bits Firefox would solve the problem so easily.

I downloaded firefox binary from mozilla's site, "decompressed" it and copied it to /usr/lib/firefox. Then, I created a new menu entry for 32 bit's firefox, and java was working rigth away

Sometimes, the most difficult problem has the answer in the most obvious place... Right in front of you eyes.

Thank you all for the answers and time spent with real noobies like me
