pop ads in linux?

I am using FC 5 with firefox. How am I still getting pop ads even though firefox is supposed to block them anyways? Also I didn't think you could pop up in linux?

Does this happen on any specific web site or accross the board? Give me an example of an offending web site and I'll try it.

I would check your default settings. Make sure you have selected to not allow pop-ups. Also, you could add the very popular extension NoScript.

ElektraMale, you are confusing two things.
Pop Ups are opened from web pages and firefox is able to prevent them from opening.. but does not always suceed.

The 2nd thing is the "Windows Messager Service" where you could send anyone (whose IP you know) a message which is displayed as a normal windows pop up dialog on his desktop, without him needing to have any programs running.
And that thing does only work on windows

you will also want to disable flash based popups too...

1. Type "about:config" into the Firefox location bar.
2. Right-click on the page and select "New" and then "Integer".
3. Name it "privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins"
4. Set the value to "2".

There is also a nice extension called "FasterFox" which allows you to set most of the browser enhancements

Hello:
Have you tried installing the Adblock extension? https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/10/
You also may want to have a look at the Filterset.G extension as well: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1136/

If these are installed I would think most, if not all pop-ups will be blocked.

As mentioned above popus are javascript code. There are ways people have found to get around firefox's popup blocker by using popunders, basically they are popups but dont appear as an active window instead they appear minimized.

If you completely want no popups just disable javascript and you will get rid of most of them but then again you will lose functionality of some websites.
