Unable to retrieve software information

When I try to go to Add/Remove software, I am getting this message:
Unable to retrieve software information

I am trying to install some programs from the oriiginal 5 CD's. Does anybody know why this is happening?

Why not just make sure you have YUM configured and use that to install new packages? After all, this will also make sure you have everything that's up-to-date.
