ATI Rage Mobility and FC5?

Hi,

after upgrading my old laptop (ATI Rage Mobility) to FC5 last week, I tried to install the ATI driver from livna.org yesterday, but it didn't work.

When I restarted the machine after installing the kernel module, the X server didn't start up and showed the following error in Xorg.0.log:

Code:

I had been using the ATI drivers from livna.org under FC4 for a long time, and it always worked right out of the box, so what's the problem under FC5?

Thanks,

Nils

Try disable SElinux, it may block the loading of 3rd party modules in the Kernel - glx in this case.

I dont' know what to tell you. However, here is part of the the output of my Xorg.0.log to see what you can expect when it is working. If it is a screen problem, you can try to connect you laptop to a external screen a restart - this was a bug in a previous version of the ATI driver.

i think youll have to wait for ATI on this one which may be a while.
the current ATI drivers are for xorg 6.8 and it doesnt work for me, so i figure just have to wait for ATI to release xorg 7.0 drivers
.. oh even though ur getting it through livna, its pretty much the same issue - livna uses the lates ATI drivers but again the latest drivers arnt for xorg 7
also, could try this:
in xorg.conf (etc/X11)
find this line:
Load dri
and comment out so it is:
#Load dri

1. I thought that the ATI Rage Mobility doesn't work with the ATI accelerated drivers.

2. For FC5, on my P2120 laptop (with ATI Radeon Mobility M6), DRI is broken (computer freezes on startx). I have to disable DRI for X to run. HOWEVER, if I startx without DRI and quit, then re-startx with DRI, it seems to work for that session. Cold-boots will always lockup.

3. In X (without DRI), VT-switching (Ctrl-Fn-X) between the X server and text terminals will eventually cause a hardlock (keyboard doesn't respond to Alt-SysRq-B). Remote SSH still works though. I think this started with the modular Xorg 7.0. This didn't occur with the previous FC4 Xorg 6.8.

I'm current with the 2.6.16 kernel and Xorg-server releases from fedora-updates.

That's what I was gathering from the Xorg.0.log as well. Now I'm wondering why I didn't get any errors with FC4, I was using the livna driver there as well and never had any problems.

I remembered trying the ati fglrx drivers from livna under FC4 and X11 just didn't startup. Didn't really try to make it work since I read about the fact that it wasn't supported. However, the patched Windows drivers often do work fine even though the official ATI releases supposedly does not support the particular chip.

My Laptop is a Radeon M6 LY. It's a low end Radeon (R100 ?), I believe it's not supported by the ATI drivers which needs at least a R300 or above.

Try disable SElinux, it may block the loading of 3rd party modules in the Kernel - glx in this case.
How do you disable SELinux and what all would it affect? I have installed the latest ATI drivers as well, because I have an ATI X800 GTO card and it is newly supported in the latest version of ATI drivers. I installed using yumex from rpm.linvina.org repository but now when I go into display properies through KDE gui it still doesn't show my card as a supported video card. I am afraid to choose something close, cause I'm not familiar with linux that much. I am operating on default and I can barely run a few screensavers let alone a graphic intensive program. If this SELinux thing could be blocking my drivers please let me know and explain any repercussions of doing so. Thanks

To disable selinux, the best way is to edit /etc/selinux/config and change the SELINUX=enforcing line to 'disabled'. Make sure there's no spaces between the '=' and the keywords as well as after the keyword. Otherwise, you can edit the kernel boot parameter line in /etc/grub/grub.conf and add 'selinux=0'.

The effect of disabling SELinux is that daemon (server) processes would run with full default permissions. Mostly not a major security risk unless you're using Linux on a server connected to the Internet.

Thank you tcwan for the info. I checked and selinux was already disabled in the /etc/SELINUX/config file so it must not have anything to do with my issue?? I have no idea what could cause the driver not to show since I never see any errors when I load it? I load it using yumex using the rpm.livina.org repository. Well that isn't exactly the topic of this thread so I'lll post it again in a new thread. Thanks for your reponse.
On a last note I noticed you reference DRI when discussing this thread. Would disabling DRI be a possible work around for me?? If it is not too diffucult, can you tell me what DRI is?? Thanks I have another thread going here in this hardware forum. I dont want to sidetrack julianus's issue here maybe you could respond in my other thread. titled - "ATI X800 GTO not recognized??" Thanks to you again and thanks to julianus for letting me interrupt this thread.
