crazy problem on SCIM and firefox 1.5.0.1

I tried to install SCIM in English session to get some Chinese input on my fedora core4, after about 10 times lost (I personally regard the help file of SCIM is horrible), finally I can do some Chinese input, but at this time firefox and thunderbird begun to crash, the error messages is something like " $prog" ${1+"",
After deleting the ~/.xinput.d, firefox recovered, but SCIM was failed, this is a crazy circumstance! What could I do to solve this stupid problem?

Yes, this happens. There's nothing you can do to fix that other than moving to FC5 (scim works peacefully alongside with FF1.5 under FC5).

There's a workaround to this: don't use scim and FF1.5 at the same time under FC4. What I do is:

1. Use FF1.5 normally. the ~/.xinput.d is renamed to ~/.xinput.d.000
2. When I need to input Chinese, I close FF1.5, rename the directory, log off and log on again. When I am in this state I can still use FF1.07, which should be on your system somewhere. However it doesn't work if you just make an icon on your desktop. Actually it does work but it can't see your bookmarks, etc. However if you open a terminal, su, and run the script on the command line it works perfectly. I can even type Chinese into Firefox.
3. When you are done, rename the directory, log off and back on.
