Xine/Totem FC4 codecs and commercial DVDs

I've installed Xine, Totem and a bunch of codecs per Stanton Finleys FC4 installation notes.

I find I cannot play commercially rented DVDs. I get sound put just distortion for the picture. I see there is a install plugins section in the configuration which opens a directory with a bunch of codes but I'm not sure what I'm to do. Just put the codecs in this directory, select one (I've tried with no results), ???

I understand that commercial DVDs are enrypted to prevent copying. I'm not interested in copying, just playing. I'm not necessarily looking to buy a codec if I can get one for free to do this, but I haven't found one free or pay.

Can someone help with this?

Thanks

Hi!
If you match, Finley's configuration (FC4), just write/try these commands:

... desktop >> preferences >> removable drives and media >> multimedia tab.

Play audio CD discs when inserted:
xine --auto-play=w --auto-scan=cd (configures xine to not have the visual window only the player)

Play video DVD disks when inserted:
xine --auto-play=f --auto-scan=dvd (configures xine to play the movie fullscreen)

can't explain why or how, but, the command for watch DVD's only works with the DVD RW+ drive, and NOT with the other DVD/CDRW (combo) drive.

I had read that from here, and simply, it has been working for me:

...and hoping, works for you too!

Thanks,

I used those settings and it fires up xine when I insert a disk, but, the picture is still distorted. I can sort of see penguins through a bunch of horizontal lines when I view the start of March of the Penguins, but, if I didn't know it was there I probably wouln't know what it was. Sound is good though.

Anyone else have any ideas?
