Wire connect & scp problem

Hi,
I have 2 unrelated network problems:

1) Connect with my Netgear Router WGT624 and the Wireless-PC Card WG511T
my Laptop on Fedora FC4 to the internet. However, I only get it to work using NetworkManagerInfo
I fail using ifconfig/iwconfig/neat although it tells me that the card is active. The only difference
I can find is the output of "iwconfig ath0" :

A) set-up with NetworkManagerInfo: Security mode:open
B) set-up with ifconfig/iwconfig/neat: Security mode:restricted

I would prefer very much option B since NetworkManagerInfo has always its own ideas to which
network it wants to connect me and cannot see how to automate my desired connection.

2) I cannot get scp to work on my local network although:
a) ssh is working on the local and external networks
b) scp is working on external networks

I check the trivial stuff (schmidt_pc is my target compter):
c) ssh frs@schmidt_pc /bin/true is quiet
d) ssh frs@schmidt_pc echo "hallo" \> ./sshtest works okay

Any help is appreciated!

Cheers, Frank
