FC5 installation issue (An error occurred unmounting the CD) - noshell no help

Hey y'all,

I'm trying to install FC5 using the CD media on a P4 3.00 GHz system with 1 Gb RAM, SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet, 160 Gb HD, NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X and NEC DVD-RW ND-3520A. After selecting the software I'd like installed (during installation from the first disc), I'm getting the error message:

An error occurred unmounting the CD. Please make sure you're not accessing /mnt/source from the shell on tty2 and then click OK to retry.

Clicking OK simply re-presents the dialog box. And once the dialog box appears, it's all over for the installation; I have no options but to shut down.

A few things:
- All discs PASSED the testing prior to Anaconda loading. To be sure, I reburned the first disc using an image obtained from a different mirror. Same error.
- Specifying "linux noshell" at the boot prompt did NOT help (NOTE: I haven't used the noshell command before, and I typed it exactly as shown between the quotes. Is that correct?)
- I suspected that this error had something to do with the way I'd partitioned my HD. I am dual-booting with Win XP Pro SP2 on /dev/hda1. I have a shared partion (vfat) on /dev/hda5, boot on /dev/hda5, and the partition I'm trying to install FC5 onto (/dev/hda7). I've got an adequately sized swap (2 Gb). I tried customizing the partitions during installation, as well as selecting "Remove linux partitions on selected drives and create default layout"; both options produce the error.

I'll admit, I'm not the most experienced linux user. I was, however, happily running FC4 prior to this madness and I used to run Ubuntu on another system ... installed both without a problem.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thanks.

CORRECTION FOR ABOVE: boot is on /dev/hda6.

I don't have a fix for this, but I'm looking for one - exact same thing happening to me!

FC4 installs on my machine without a hitch... no go with FC5. I have an nVidia4 chipset, and I can't even run Anaconda in graphical mode. "linux noprobe" does not fix it. So, I booted the install with "linux text," and got to the dependency check. About a quarter through that, exact same error you're getting.

With the error message posted, I moved to tty2 using the Alt+F2 keystroke, and nothing at all was going on there... no interference on tty2.

Anyone have an idea on this one??

I don't have a fix, but that I did happen to me once after the package selection step. I had a lot of issues installing FC5 that I posted in this thread:

I'm glad I wasn't the only one. But I wish I knew what the cause was.

It just occurred to me that installing from DVD might render unmounting the CD moot. That assumption might be incorrect, but in any case, the install appears to be working as I type this (on another machine).

If y'all have access to a DVD burner, you might want to give that a try.

I actually am installing from a DVD...

My machine has only one optical drive (dual layer burner), so I downloaded the DVD iso for the install.

It's unlikely the DVD media itself is the problem... the iso file's SHA1 is good. I burned the disc using k3b, and it verified the md5sum on the disc as well. This burner has never coastered anything for me. Given the good md5sum on the disc, I don't think it's the media.

Any ideas anyone??

One more important bit... booting the install with "linux noshell text" does NOT fix this.

When I used the noshell option, a quick Alt+F2 shows, as you'd expect, no command prompt on tty2... but the same error occurs.

It happened to me after package selection only if I would use the "go back" button to change a selection before continuing the install. I had to do a slow and careful selection to make sure I didn't need to touch that button.

FIXED IT - Sorta.

Thank you glanz - in previous installation attempts, I had selected package groups to install.

This time, I instead use only the default "Office and Productivity" installation - and it worked! This doesn't say a lot for anaconda, IMO... but oh well, that's how this error is fixed.

Next up - forcing Nvidia modules to work in runlevel 5, without having to boot to 3 and fixing it!

For me the secret was to choose some optional packages. I do wish there was the ol' Everything option.
