when I pulled up /var/log/messages, I have a very long list. What should I be looking for?
In /var/log/messages you could look at the last boot up which had the problem. All boots are listed with a date and a time so you should be able to work out the where and when of what has happened, and then you could look for the words 'error' 'failed' or 'unable', some of which may start with capitals. A start could be something like:
grep -i failed /var/log/messages
Bear in mind that some errors and failures are not important, so I would actually just read the whole section of /var/log/messages which refers to the problematical boot to see what it says. It is usually only a couple of hundred lines most of which can be ignored.
