So: For x86_64 SL users, you need to make sure you have your good video drivers and install a wide array of 32-bit libs -- perhaps even more than you thought you would. And the GLX error might very well have little to do with your existing video configuration.

Yep, that's the key. New Fedora x86_64 user here, SL was practically the only thing I ever used the Windows laptop for (I ran Linux on my PS3). For me that GLX error was fixed when I installed some SDL libs that I'd missed. I found out I needed the i686 gstreamers too.
But it's running fine with sound, streaming and voice chat working. Runs better than it does in Win7 on this box.
