Installing Fedora 17 on vmware workstation 8

Hello everybody,
i'll start by mentioning that i'm new to linux and i've decided that it is time I learnt more about it. i'm trying to install Fedora 17 on vmware workstation 8. i have created a virtual machine and i'm trying to install from Fedora 17 DVD but installation hangs at the beginning. when i press the tab key, it ends up giving me this message:
"dracut warning: can't mount root file system
Dropping to debug shell
dracut:/# "
i've followed the recommended settings from vmware's site, unfortunately to no avail. can somebody help me as i really want to start using linux more and Fedora comes highly recommended.

thanking you in advance.
