kde recovery

Someone deleted the panel on my kde and ever since the panel couldnt be recovered.. is there anyway that i can reset the whole kde environment as i cant even get updatess to install.

you could delete or rename ~/.kde/ that will take you back to the default you had when you first installed. You will lose any customisation you have done though. It might be a good idea to rename and see if that fixes the problem.

i dont know how to go about it so can you please tell me how i can go about renaming my kde or deleting it.. thanks

It is the directory /home/yourusername/.kde/ you are renaming. It contains the config files for kde and many kde apps. Note that you will lose any custom setup including for most kde apps.

You can do it in Dolphin. Foirst make sure you are in your home directory then select view and show hidden files. Look for .kde and right click on it and select rename. Chnage it to .kdeold or something. Close Dolphin and log out.
Restart KDE and it will recreate that directory with the defaults. Test and see if the problems still exist.

Bring up a terminal / console window
right mouse click then open terminal

mv .kde .kde.OLD
or if you are not in your home directory
mv /home/yourusername/.kde /home/yourusername/.kde.OLD

thanks a lot but do i need to login the kde environment before i do this or i can do same from the gnome desktop environment.

It would probably be better to do it from Gnome. Then when you next log in to KDE the directory will be recreated.

i just tried it in the kde environment and tried both the dolphin method and the terminal windows way and it still didnt restore the kde desktop to default settings...

Is there any other way to do it?

i did it in terminal mode in gnome and it worked.. thanks
