Security and Privacy Sadly, malware, spyware, hackers and privacy threats abound in today's world. Let's be paranoid and secure our penguins, and slam the doors on privacy exploits.

How secure is my fedora 12

Hello,

I am using Fedora 12 and I am rather new to linux.

I have selinux and my firewall installed.

However, every computer connected to the internet is open to be hacked.

However, how secure is linux? Is linux more difficult to hack into?

Many thanks,

In it's default state, Fedora specifically and Linux in general are very secure (distribution dependant). Un less you do something silly, like have your user name and password the same or run as root all of the time, you are fine. Enjoy the fact that there are no viruses for linux in the wild and whenever an exploit is discovered it's patched within hour-days not weeks-months(sometimes years) like other operating systems.

Depends on how you define "secure". I assume this one is a rhetorical question.

More difficult than what?

Windows - you bet.
OSX - maybe
NetBSD - depends on the administrator.

An easy way to do some simple checks on your system, e.g. open ports, is the ShieldsUp web site:

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

This will give you a first impression on how easy it would be for a hacker to attack your computer.
