What can you do with Fedora Live

I don't suppose you can use any program in Fedora Live that isn't already there.

I am in the process of playing with Fedora 17 Live before installing it over a Fedora 14 installation.

I tried to add gimp, and it seemed to claim that it had added it, but it wasn't there.

Is there any way around this?

Note. I see I have to be very careful not to install Fedora 17 in the process of playing with Fedopra 17 Live. I intend to install it from a DVD, when I've prepared the ground, and I don't want to install it from Live by accident!

If you use a usb stick and the fedora live usb creator you can add some persistence and install stuff for next time, be warned nothing can be deleted from the persistence and once it's full it's fu I mean knackered and will not boot.

I believe I installed gparted to the F17 Alpha LiveCD environment with yum, used it to create a hd partition and then installed to that partition. Don't know why that would not work for gimp.

Of course you can. Just use "yum install ...'

Should work. See if the package and executable is installed.

Re: What can you do with Fedora Live

In my opinion, it is extremely hard to install by accident. So, do not worry!

I have installed gparted and used it multiple times using live CD and yes, I have installed GIMP also in the past. If you try launching from a terminal, does it give any error?

Re: What can you do with Fedora Live

If you're running from read-only media (CD, or USB without a persistent partition), installing software will only work for the duration of your live system usage – it'll be lost when you reboot. You can install software temporarily, but I wouldn't bother with anything large (e.g. Libre Office etc.).

As nonamedotc says, it's pretty difficult to install Fedora to hard-disk accidentally. The installer is paranoid about modifying the disk without your authorization.
