George Hotz says he's hacked 'unhackable' PlayStation 3

Quote:
THE hacker who made headlines when he unlocked Apple's iPhone in 2007 says he has now hacked Sony's PlayStation 3.

American George Hotz, 20, said he was working on his latest hack effort but intended to post full details online soon, the BBC reports.

"It's supposed to be unhackable - but nothing is unhackable," said Mr Hotz, also known online as geohot.

"I can now do whatever I want with the system. It's like I've got an awesome new power - I'm just not sure how to wield it."

Although on the market for three years, the PS3 is the only games console that has not been hacked, the BBC said.

Mr Hotz said his hack, which took about five weeks, would allow others to run pirated games or homemade software

"Three years, two months, 11 days... thats a pretty secure system," Mr Hotz wrote on his blog.

"Very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software..."

He also claimed that Sony would not be able to fix the hack.

"The theory isn't really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder."

Sony said it was "investigating the report" and would "clarify the situation" when it had more information

That's just wrong. I wish people like that would get real jobs...maybe he should work for Sony to make the PS3 unhackable.

For the cost of a PS3 it's good to know that it wont necessarily become a brick after PS#++ is released.

Yeah, well everyone's entitled to their opinion but I've been waiting for this for a long time.

Apparently "Three years, two months, 11 days..."

Hmm the cost of blank Blu Rays will keep people from pirating PS3 games for a long while.

You're not very familiar with the PS3, are you?

or the PSP, the Xbox, Xbox360...

One thing they all have in common is storage.

Well, the 80G hard drive is not really helpful. But on the other hand, since the PS3 slim is no able to directly install other OS on it. The hacked firmware may able to open an opportunity for it. I always want to have a power processor PC (Apple G series is obsolete, so, no!). Those IBM WS are just too expense, and I do not know what I can do for it. But the PS3 seems like well in the sensible economic margin. Yes?

Oh right, because you can't just swap it out with a higher capacity one...
