WUSB54g stopped working
Hello! My wireless adapter stopped working randomly the other day. I think the last time it was working was right before I put the computer into hibernate for the first time. Afterwards, it stopped working even after restarting.
modinfo p54usb shows (I'm leaving out information that seems irrelevant because I can't copy and paste without the internet, so I'm typing what I see from another computer)
firmware: isl3887usb
firmware: isl3886usb
dmesg | grep firmware doesn't seem to show any requests for firmware related to it.
lsusb shows something like
bus 002 device 001: ID... linux foundation 1.1 root hub
bus 001 device 003: id... linksys wusb54g wireless adapter
bus 001 device 002: id.. transcend information inc
bus 001 device 001: id.. linux foundation 2.0 root hub
ifconfig shows lo, wmaster0, and wlan0 (as UP)
When I start up, in boot messages I get something like this
WARNING deprecated config file /etc/modprobe.conf, all config files belong into /etc/modprobe.d/.
WARNING all config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, it will be ignored in a future release
Device wlan0 does not seem to be present, delaying initializtion [FAILED]
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to fix this? The firmware is there, and the hardware appears to be there. I'm pretty new to linux.
Thank you

Well does anyone maybe know what the following means?
WARNING deprecated config file /etc/modprobe.conf, all config files belong into /etc/modprobe.d/.
WARNING all config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, it will be ignored in a future release

For the first problem, you said you tried restarting, but have you tried shuttting the system down (power off) to reset the hardware to a cold powerup state?
The deprecation warning messages say that you have 2 files, /etc/modprobe.conf and /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
The first file should be moved into /etc/modprobe.d directory if it has anything useful in it or deleted if it is an empty zero length file. The second file is lacking a .conf at the end and should be renamed to something with a .conf after it or have its contents transferred to the blacklist.conf file that should already be there.

snowbarr,
I know you've done quite a bit of looking at this yourself , but i would like to see some more output in full context for helping you trouble shoot this
can you please do the following
before you plug in the usb wlan card:
uname -a
/sbin/lsmod
ifconfig
iwconfig
please run dmesg -c , then plug in the wlan card 9 this will clear the dmesg buffer and anything we see after that SHOULD be the from the wireless card driver
please provide the results of the following commands immediately after you plug in the usb wlan card
/sbin/lsmod
dmesg
tail /var/log/messages
iwconfig
ifconfig -a
sorry to be redundant on some of this but , it will really help to see it all at once
last // please post the relevant lines from /var/log/boot.log for the supposed unavailability of the wlan0 , which a few lines of context around them so we see what happened before and after

thanks ,
that sufficient info i think to start working
fist off , you are correct , your usb driver and firmware etc are all OK.. your card is detected and set up as wlan0
its run by NetworkManager , all good
heres the bad bits i see, you seem to also be running the network service ( not just NetworkManager), which is trying to bring up wlan0 AND wlan0:1
i do not know what wlan0:1 is in your set up , did you create another IP address for your system?...
I get the impression this is a laptop .. is it a laptop ?
Do you need more than one Ip address running on the SAME wireless card? That is what it looks like you are doing since you have a wlan0 and a wlan0:1
lets fix some things
first :
do you want NetworkManager to manage your wireless card? if so , i suggest we turn off the "network" service
chkconfig network off
and make sure NetworkManager is on
chkconfig NetworkManager on
next , do you need wlan0:1 .. if not please select the device in NetworkManager gui and delete it
that should get rid of the boot erros , but may or may not help fix your wireless connection itself..
once youve done these tasks , let me know via screenshots , what NetworkManager looks like in the devices section
also once you've deleted your wlan0:1 device .. try connecting to wifi and post results of var/log/messages

It's not a laptop. I did not intentionally create another IP address, I may have accidentally? I do not need more than one IP.
So I can get to a 'network' gui. I don't see a NetworkManager gui.
I think wlan0:1 might be wlan0. I might have messed up some settings trying to make things work earlier this week.
When I open the 'network' gui, it won't let me delete, activate or deactivate anything. Those options are just grayed out.

dont worry , this is fixable
lets tart by getting you acquainted with NetworkManager
lets make sure its running
service NetworkManager restart
after you restart it you should see an icon of two computers layered on top of each other in your menu bar
right click it .. this is the nm-applett.. or network mnager gui

No problem is an idiots problem, we are all responsible. I'm just not sure that leaves me time to do anything more than fix stuff.
So,
Are you on the internet via wireless again?
