tips for speeding up xwindows

I notice that my machine is quite slow since I reinstalled. I was previously running FC6 and things were a lot better.

What can I do to get rid of this desktop lag? I am running this on a p4 1.3ghz with 384 MB ram. Not the best and it's from the 90s but it works. I didn't install the office packages or KDE. Just a basic install.

I notice that my load averages are consistently higher than they were on my FC6 machine.

Upgrade? I'm using Fedora 11.

I'm running on an old PIII (750MHz) laptop with 512M... The only problem I have was likely caused by a lightning
that took out the winmodem (no loss), but may have caused other problems.

Operationally, X is plenty fast... except when my timer goes nuts.

For 384MB ram perhaps XFCE would be better than Gnome. Also, did you apply the latest updates ?
Code:
su
yum update --enablerepo=u*g -v
reboot
