How do I install Skype 4 onto Fedora 17, x86_64

I can't seem to install it. I tried downloading it and then doing a rpm -Uvh, and even a yum install http://..../skype-4-....

No matter what it seems to fail. I keep on getting the error "Error: Protected multilib versions" on multiple packages.

I have also found that some people were able to install "alien" and then convert the Ubuntu 64 bit deb package into an RPM which they used to install. I couldn't seem to get this "alien" installed by installing html2text and their deb RPM package either.

Can someone please give me some guidence?

Howdy,

The main problem with Skype is that it is a 32 bit application, so it is a bit troublesome to install on 64 bit Linux.

Alien is a Perl program and you can get it from here: http://joeyh.name/code/alien/

Try AutoPlus to install and then in Skype check for and install update. I am on a new laptop and 4.0 seems to work fine. I have been using Skype on 64 bit laptops for several years, just need to have the 32 bit lib files installed.

The issue is the autoprotect. For most of us, 64 bit Skype is installing without any problems. Download the rpm, run yum install <path-to-rpm> and it's installing, pulling in all necessary libraries. Try using yum instead of rpm and see if you still get the error. If you do, then

yum update --setopt=protected_multilib=false

should work and shouldn't break anything.

DISCLAIMER--there's always possibility of breakage, but the one or two times I've had to do this, it was fine.

Thanks smr54; that seems to have fixed it.
